Surfing in the Garden Route
The Garden Route offers some of the most scenic and enjoyable surfing along South Africa’s south‑east coast, with great waves for visitors of all skill levels just a short drive from Mountain Magic.
From sheltered point breaks to long stretches of beach where sandbanks shift with the seasons, the coastline between Wilderness and Sedgefield provides surfers with a variety of conditions. Whether you’re chasing clean winter swells or fun summer waves, there is almost always somewhere working nearby.
Victoria Bay (Vic Bay)
About 15–20 minutes’ drive from Hoekwil, Victoria Bay is one of the region’s most iconic surf spots. This sheltered cove features a classic right‑hand point break that produces consistent, rideable waves and regularly hosts local surf competitions.
It’s perfect for intermediate surfers looking for quality waves with a dramatic backdrop of cliffs and ocean. On a good swell the point can produce long, clean rides that make Vic Bay a favourite stop for travelling surfers along the Garden Route.
Gericke’s Point
One of the few spots in the area that can be offshore on an east wind. Smaller swells often produce a fun left, while larger, cleaner swells with light south‑west winds can create a quality right.
It’s best surfed with friends as it is considered a deeper water wave. Even if the surf is quiet, the walk out to the headland is spectacular and well worth the visit for the views alone.
Wilderness Beaches
These are some personal favourites (a little biased as Mountain Magic is only a few minutes away). Wilderness offers kilometres of coastline to explore, with shifting sandbanks creating different peaks along the beach.
It’s generally best with light winds and a higher tide. From Lentjiesklip on the western side to Kleinkranz on the eastern side, there are countless sections where waves can line up depending on the banks and swell direction.
Jeffreys Bay (J‑Bay)
Often considered the best right‑hand point break in the world, Jeffreys Bay is about a three‑hour drive from Wilderness – perfect for a day trip with a coffee stop along the way.
Vic Bay is often a good indicator of when J‑Bay starts working. Once Vic begins closing out, it can be a sign that the swell is big enough further east. That’s usually the moment to hit the road.
